2016Still Life -Polka Dots and Moonbeams
Egg/oil tempera on paper38 x 28 cmPrivate collection
My daughter Cara (also a painter)has often urged me to find moreinteresting titles for my paintings.Maybe the title of this Still Life wassomewhat in response to that.
It’s actually a throwback to the titleof a song from 1940 which youmay know. I play it sometimes dueto my interest in jazz. The connectionstarted through the subject matterwhich includes a paper napkin with apolka dot pattern. The pattern isalso echoed in the perforations insome of the utensils. However, the‘Moonbeams’ is more of an imaginativeor perhaps metaphorical expressionthrough the crescent shape of reflectedlight on one of the utensils, thestripes on the tablecloth or even thelight that illuminates the space in whichthey are observed.
